Situated within the Bener Meriah and Central Aceh districts of the Gayo Highlands of Sumatra, Indonesia, Kopepi Ketiara Cooperative is a women-led coffee cooperative notable for its focus on gender equity and social change. The cooperative was founded in 2009 with just 38 and has grown to nearly 2000, the majority of whom are women. Ketiara has also placed a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and improving the livelihood of the community through initiatives such as organic farming workshops and seedling donations.
Over 1000 farmers manage around 1000 hectares of coffee farms, 70% of which are in Bener Mariah and 30% in Central Aceh. The region’s high elevation (1200-1500 metres above sea level), cool climate and volcanic soil provides an ideal climate for cultivating high quality Arabica coffee. The region’s microclimates coupled with the wet-hulled “Gilling Basah” processing method used by the cooperative results in a flavour profile characterised by notes of chocolate, tropical fruit, sweet spices and herbal undertones.
